M-Pro 7 Tactical Soft-Sided Kit

One afternoon in late September, while hunting black bear in Maine, I was able to fill my tag with my first bear. As I lowered my rifle from my tree stand, the rope slipped from my hands and my rifle stuck barrel first in the soft earth like a flagpole. When I climbed down and retrieved my rifle, there was a solid dirt plug jamming my barrel.

I returned to the lodge and rummaged until I found a rod that would fit into the rifle barrel to dislodge the plug. I immediately began my search for a travel size cleaning kit to take on my hunts. After searching several stores, both in person and online, I became frustrated with the lack of finding a complete cleaning kit that was small enough and that came with a metal rod versus a metal cable.

Woodland Buck by Rinehart Targets

Shooting at a flat target is great for improving accuracy and dialing in your sight but there is no better way to prepare for a hunt than using a 3D target of the actual animal you are going to be hunting. Knowing the anatomy of the game animal being pursued is critical in assisting the hunter in making a quick clean kill.

For deer hunters, the Woodland Buck by Rinehart is a great 3D target for practice and perfecting each shot. The Woodland Buck’s features allows for an archer to shoot and review how accurate the shot placement is. Knowing where to place your shot in the simulated vitals on the Woodland Buck and practicing for perfect shot placement allows you to be confident when the moment of truth arrives in the stand.

Woodland Buck
The Woodland Buck’s body is completely molded from strong Solid FX Foam™ with no fillers ensuring archers receive the best value for the price point.

The Woodland Buck is double-sided with the left side featuring visible outlines of the heart, lung, liver, intestines, as well as the shoulder and leg bones. The right side features the visible outlines of the shoulder, legs and intestines with a 3D cut out of the heart, lung, liver for higher details and visibility aiding in precise accuracy of the vitals.

The target body is completely molded from strong Solid FX Foam™ with no fillers, ensuring archers receive the best value for the price point. The target’s vitals feature Rinehart’s exclusive patented replaceable locking insert, made of Solid Rinehart “Self Healing” foam. This self-healing foam is the same material that is in the Rinehart targets that were selected in 2012 by the International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) to be used exclusively as the target provider for IBO National and World Events.

Right side with cut out vital area for easy viewing at greater distances.

The self healing vital core is approved for field tips, fixed and expandable broadheads on carbon, aluminum and wood arrows shot from traditional bows, compound bows and even crossbows. Pulling the arrows is extremely easy; according to the manufacturer archers will not need any lubricants, gimmicks or pullers. The foam will heal itself within 10 seconds; ready to be shot again over and over. Not only will the replaceable core feature allow archers to save money but it will allow the target to last for years to come.Even hits to the main body seem to have “self-healing” properties. I have hit my target outside of the vital area and the hole is hardly noticeable.

The Woodland Buck is designed to simulate the body structure of a 100lb mature 8-point buck. The antlers and head are removable for easy storage and portability. Included with the buck are two metal stakes for easy set up and stabilization of your target. Weighing approximately 16 pounds, moving the target out for practice is very easy.

The Woodland Buck has a MSRP of $179.99 and the replaceable insert is $51.99. The products are available at select Rinehart dealers and online stores. Carp-i-vore™ from Bohning

When I started bowfishing, I equipped my bow with a reel and bowfishing arrow. I was using a three point bristle arrow rest that was part of the original bow setup. Since bowfishing arrows are much heavier than hunting arrows, the bottom bristle started to wear down. This became a problem since the arrow could fall to the side of the rest, creating a hassle to re-load, a missed shot or possibly a hazardous situation should the stop-screw bracket on the arrow hit the rest.

I found a solution when I found the Carp-i-vore™ from Bohning. The Carp-i-vore™ is the first and only fully-adjustable rest that combines the speed of a roller rest and the security of a capture rest. When I use the Carp-i-vore™, I know that my arrow is ready to go at any moment no matter when the shot opportunity happens. Speed is imperative when it comes to bowfishing and with the easy top load design I can nock an arrow, drop it in, and shoot within mere seconds.

Carp-i-vore™

Carp-i-vore™ from Bohning offers speed and security.Carp-i-vore™ is reversible for right or left-handed shooters and features vertical and horizontal adjustments making it perfect for any bowfishing set up. It is easy to install and can be set up in minutes.

Carp-i-vore™ has the option to change out the roller for a third set of bristles. The side bristles are also replaceable. I have never had my arrow fall out of the rest or fall to the side of the roller; even with running from the front to the back of the boat or twisting around for some tricky angles from shore or boat.

side viewCarp-i-vore™ has an MSRP of $48.77 and is available at www.bohning.com/carp-ivore-bowfishing-rest, as well as other online stores.

The Shield Archery Backstop by B.U.P. Sports

One of the hardest parts about archery for many archers is keeping yourself from focusing on “NOT” missing, when we should be focusing on where we want the arrow to hit.

The Shield Archery Backstop by B.U.P. Sports allows you to focus on hitting your target without having to worry about missing the target and losing an arrow. The Shield is beneficial for both seasoned archers and those just beginning to get into the sport.

From teaching beginners to testing how far you can shoot, The Shield can help you from losing your valuable arrows. The other benefit of The Shield is that you can use the corners of your targets which were previously unused because missing meant losing an arrow or wasted valuable time searching for that arrow. The Shield will not only extend the life of your target, it will save you time and money from missed targets and lost arrows.

With The Shield behind your targets you can focus on building your confidence and skill for when the moment of truth happens in the field. Photo Credit: Michelle Harmes

Although The Shield is tough enough to stop an arrow, it is gentle on arrows and allows for easy removal. The manufacturer recommends placing The Shield at least the length of your arrow away from any walls, fences, etc., as the arrow can go through the backstop about half way. The diameter of the practice tip should be no greater than that of the arrow.

The Shield stops all types of arrows with field tips, tested to 370 feet per second (narrow shaft carbon tested). It is not made to be used with broad heads or crossbows; however you can special order a crossbow backstop. The Shield is made of multi-layered recycled plastic fibers positioned in such a way that they stop the arrows energy much like a bullet proof vest. This is covered with industrial felt with fabric web loops around the perimeter. The Shield does not include a stand but can be easily set up by hanging or leaning against your target.

The Shield is lightweight and durable; weighing approximately 1 1/2 pounds per square ft. I can easily carry the 3’x4′ size with one hand to bring it inside when I am finished shooting. The manufacturer recommends storing The Shield indoors when not in use.

The Shield is extremely easy to set up; you can either hang it or lean it up against your target. Photo Credit: Michelle Harmes

The Shield is available in sizes from 3’x4’ to up to 6’X14’ and have a MSRP from $89.95 to $789.95. Available in black, camo and black with “Huntin is Good” stencil. Visit www.bupsports.com  to read more about this product and to see the variety of sizes offered.

Although The Shield will stop your arrows it is not a substitute for safety. Always be sure of what is beyond your target and never fire an arrow in the direction of a person, pet or personal property.

Porkchop Hog Decoy by Boar Down Decoy Company

Boardown.jpg When I first saw the Porkchop Hog Decoy by Boar Down my very first thought was “That is genius!” As hunters, we use decoys for just about every other animal and there was a need for hog decoys too! I had to have one of the “first and only 3-D hog decoys” on the market today.

Feral hogs feel more secure about approaching an area if there is already a hog there. The Porkchop hog decoy was designed to give hogs the confidence to approach and can be a huge advantage in both hunting and trapping of hogs.  Boar Down has put much research and design into the Porkchop hog decoy in order to produce a quality, lifelike product to lure in feral hogs.  The body of the decoy is made of 12-mill foam with taxidermy quality eyes giving the decoy a lifelike design. The coloring and hair pattern of the coat creates a very realistic look. The decoy is the size of a young hog making the decoy perfect for bringing in mature boars but not too large to intimidate a young group of hogs.

side[1]

The decoy is secured into the ground with a two-piece metal stake secured by a wing nut in the middle of the decoys back making it easy to set-up in the field. The middle stake design allows the decoy to make non-aggressive movement by wind. The decoy is very light and easily folds down for stowing and transporting in the field.

The MSRP of the Porkchop hog decoy is $59.98 and can be purchased at www.boardown.com. You can keep up with harvests and news on Boar Down’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BoarDown.

I cannot wait for the opportunity to hog hunt with this decoy this summer. It is definitely essential gear for hog hunting that I never knew I was missing and I won’t be without it on my next hog hunt. Stay tuned for an update from the field on the success of this great decoy!

Bore-Tips and Gun-Tips by Swab-Its

Bore-Tips and Gun-Tips come in various calibers. Photo: Michelle Harmes

Every gun owner knows the importance of keeping their firearms clean. Regular maintenance and lubrication will keep firearms functioning properly and safely.

In the past, I have used patches to clean my guns. I never felt that the patches were getting the guns cleaned and oiled uniformly. I always felt there had to be a better way, and now there is with Bore-Tips and Gun-Tips from Swab-Its.

When I first saw Bore-Tips I was amazed at how they fit perfectly to the barrel.  No more patches, no more guessing and they are lint free.

The exact barrel fit insures complete contact with the barrel. Photo: Michelle Harmes

To provide complete contact with the entire rifling of the barrel, Bore-Tips are engineered specifically for each bore. With 360 degrees of contact you can be sure that your barrel is being cleaned and oiled properly.  They will even thread onto your standard cleaning rod so you won’t have to purchase a new kit. Best of all, they are reusable. That’s right! I said REUSABLE.  Use, wash, dry and repeat! A great way to save money and eliminate piles of used oily patches.

The product is perfect for tight places. Here I am using it in an AR. Photo: Michelle Harmes

Gun-Tips are also reusable and perfect for getting into the tight angles and small spaces in your firearm. I am now able to get my AR completely clean after spending a weekend stalking hogs. Riding in an open ATV can get dirt places you would least expect and when dirt combines with oil to become an enemy of a functioning firearm.

Cleaning an AR used to be a challenge, with all the angles and small places–it is very easy to snag a patch or even get a cotton swab stuck, or worse unraveling. That is not a problem with the Gun-Tips, they come in many sizes and are perfect for getting in and around small areas without snagging or leaving lint behind.

Bore-Tips come in many calibers and they are adding more sizes. The Bore-Tips currently come in packages of 5 to 6 for rifle/handgun calibers and packages of 3 for 12 gauge.

Swab-its® selection of firearm swabs are available at retailers across the country as well as online by visiting www.swab-its.com

The MSRP for a pack of Bore Tips is $6.98 for rifle/handgun and $9.98 for 12 gauge, For more information on using Bore-Tips, visit www.boretips.com

The Swab-It products are proudly made in the USA!

Note: Bore-tips are not recommended for use with solvents designed to remove plastic.

Fellow staff member Diane Hassinger has this to say about Bore Tips:

I brought Bore Tips Swab Its home with me from the Shot Show.  I showed the bag to my husband and told him they were helping to clean our guns.  He took them out to the shop, and I didn’t think much about it.

A couple weeks later, I asked him how well he liked the Swab Its.  He said they were the best Q-Tips he had ever used!  He really liked that he could get into small places, and reuse and clean them as needed.  I asked if he had used them with our cleaning rods, with that he got them out and cleaned my 30-06.  The product that he loved as a Q-Tip, now became even more valuable to him with its ability to do many jobs.  These products get 4 thumbs us from us!!” ~Diane H
