Reflecting pond at Discovery Park

Discovery Park is a Seattle treasure, but few know of the full breadth of offerings it contains. I spent an afternoon wandering its miles of paths recently, and was impressed by the range of experiences held in its 500+ acres. Everything from calm reflecting pools (shown above) to tribal centers to beachfront lounging to walks through the forest, with the added historical bonus of Fort Lawton and its rolling fields perfect for afternoon picnics.

It’s hard to pick a favorite spot, but I have to say that wandering from the North Beach to the South Beach at low tide is an experience that I’d highly recommend to all. The views of the Olympic Mountains are spectacular and when you round the lighthouse point, the view of Mount Rainier will take your breath away.

The Hidden Valley trail

The trails will bring you through different forest environments, from pine trees to deciduous glades, and can range from easy to quite a workout. Trail runners will love the loop trail and its exercise potential, and the stairs to and from the North Beach will entertain and delight with their scenery.

Bring your family, loved ones, and visitors from out of town and enjoy the outdoors without getting out of town! For more information about the park, see here.
