Smith Rock
By Mike Johnson

The Mars Hill Outdoors crowd has a few solid traditions. One of my favorite is the “Annual Smith Rock Climbing Trip.” Twenty two of us met up at Smith Rock State Park in Oregon to enjoy a weekend of climbing and premiere cuisine. One of my favorite memories from the trip is actually not even climbing related. On Saturday night, long after most people in camp had gone to bed, we sat huddled around a picnic table in the dark, looking for shooting stars and constellations.

It’s interesting that I fill my life up with things to keep me busy and “in town,” but the thing that puts my soul at rest is sitting in the dark and looking into the heavens. There is an amazing song by Pierce Pettis which is taken straight from the Old Testament book of Job, and it goes like this,

“Man is born to trouble /
All the days of his life /
As the sparks fly upward /
From bonfires at night /
They fill up the heavens /
With pin points of light /
And I’ve got a hope /
That is not in this world //”
